Program Description

Programs offered during the 2011/2012 school year:

Mahekum Incentive Program – in partnership with the Moose Cree First Nation Social Services Department this program allows students to accumulate “Mahekun” bucks through attendance, participation in school activities and academics. These bucks can be used to purchase items from the school store.

Counseling Unit – Two (2) full time social counselors were employed by the school in the Fall of  2011. Duties of the social counselors involves helping students and their families to deal with issues that can affect the student’s success in school. They also offer in-class presentations to students on health and awareness issues, and are available to all DDECS students for one-on-one counseling.

Resource Department – The Resource department works with students and teachers to ensure that all of the learning needs of exceptional students are being met. They work with identified students with special needs, as well as, the developmental students in the Life Skills Program.

Continuing Education Program – We offered high school credit courses to adult students attempting to complete their high school diploma.

Extracurricular Activities – There are a number of extracurricular activities planned during the year, such as after school sports – indoor (basketball, volleyball, floor hockey) and out-door (baseball). There is also a girls Intermediate basketball team, a boys Senior basketball team and  a High school boys and girls hockey team for the 2011/2012 school year.

Independent Courses – a challenge of being a small and remote school is offering students a wide range of courses. Over the last few years the use of independent learning courses has grown in popularity and success. High School Credit Courses are selected and purchased from the Independent Learning Centre – ILC Day School Program and are available to senior students with permission of the Principal.

Cultural Activities – The Grade 7/8 classes participate in a winter and spring cultural outdoor education program, to learn traditional skills and teachings of our local area. DDECS also hosts the annual “Miliwe Ma Ko Shay Win Day”. An open invitation is given to elders in our community to participate in a celebration of our Cree traditions and Heritage. Various traditional workshops are held by local people. Also the students learn how to prepare traditional foods. This all ends with a “traditional” feast.
